Nigeria beat Cote d’Ivoire to seal 2022 AWCON qualification

Nigeria are through to the finals of the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations after Esther Okoronkwo’s second-half goal earned them a 1-0 win over Cote d’Ivoire in the second leg of the final qualifying round in Abidjan to secure a 3-0 aggregate win.
Randy Waldrum’s side headed into the second leg at Stade Robert Champroux with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.

They suffered a scare when they conceded a penalty in the first half, but Chiamaka Nnadozie dived to make a save.
And with three minutes of normal time left, Okoronkwo scored to end the Ivorians hopes of qualification.
The Super Falcons — who are record winners of the tournament — will be going into the 2022 AWCON as defending champions, having won the last edition in 2018.
After failing to hold in 2020 due to Covid-19-related health scare, the AWCON tournament returns this year.

Due to run from July 2 to July 23 in Morocco, the competition will serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The top four teams will go on to represent Africa in next year’s World Cup.
