Champions League: Rivers United through to second preliminary round

Rivers United are through to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after a 2-0 aggregate win over Young Africans.

Stanley Eguma’s side went into Sunday’s first preliminary round, second leg tie with the Tanzanian club at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium leading 1-0 from the first leg — and needing just a draw to progress.

Uche Onwuasoanya struck in the 82 minute to secure the win for the Port Harcourt club.

The Nigeria Professional Football League runners-up will face Sudanese giants Al-Hilal Omdurman next month in the second preliminary round.

The winners of the tie — which will be played over two legs — will advance to the group stage.

Meanwhile, the other Nigerian club in the competition, Akwa United, will be looking to join Rivers United in the next round of the competition when they face Algerian champions CR Belouizdad in their first preliminary round, second leg game later today.

Kennedy Boboye’s team won the first leg 1-0 at Godswill Akpabio Stadium through Ubong Friday’s late goal.
