Kelechi Iheanacho named Premier League Player of the Month

Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for March.
The Nigerian beat Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen, Tottenham striker Harry Kane, West Ham forward Jesse Lingard, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, Illan Meslier of Leeds, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw and Brighton’s Leandro Trossard to the award.
After a poor run of form that saw him find the back of the net just once in the Premier League prior to last month, the 24-year-old fired in five goals in March. He began the month with a well-timed volley which earned Brendan Rogers’ side a 1-1 draw at Burnley. That was followed by another strike at Brighton and an hat-trick in the 5-0 win over Sheffield United.

Iheanacho, who struck twice against Manchester United on March 21 to help the Foxes reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup, earns the award for the first time in his career.

The former Manchester City player becomes the fourth Nigerian — after Austin Okocha (November 2003), Osaze Odemwingie (September 2010, April 2011, November 2012), and Odion Jude Ighalo (December 2015) — to win the award.
