Nigeria striker, Junior Ajayi netted a decisive penalty to help CAF champions league winners, Al Ahly, clinch the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup Bronze at the Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan, Qatar on Thursday.
The 25-year-old forward came off the bench to score the winning penalty against South American champions Palmeiras FC, after a stalemate in the regulation time.
The former Shooting Stars striker, who sat out the round two fixture against Al Duhail and the semi-final tie against Bayern Munich, replaced Congo DR’s Walter Bwalya in the 58th minute.
Ten minutes after coming on, Ajayi found the back of the net after receiving a through ball from Amr El Soleya, but his strike was ruled out for offside.
In the shootout, Al Ahly converted three kicks, while Palmeiras missed three, with Ajayi’s spotkick turning out to be the winning kick — after Palmeiras’ Felipe Melo missed for the South Americans — to gift the Pitso Mosimane led North African side a 3-2 win, which earned them their second bronze medal in FIFA Club World Cup history since 2006.
