Nasarawa United defender Chieme Martins has died after collapsing during the Solid Miners’ Nigeria Professional Football League game against Katsina United at Lafia Township Stadium on Sunday, the League Management Company has confirmed.
Martins reportedly slumped after collision with an opposing player in first-half stoppage time during the Matchday 23 tie.
“The League Management Company (LMC) has confirmed the report of the death of Chineme Martins, a defender with Nasarawa United FC, who slumped during the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 23 against Katsina United in Lafia,” the league body reported.
After ambulance delay, he was taken to the hospital but he never regained consciousness.
There has been no official confirmation of the cause of the defender’s fatal collapse, but an autopsy is expected to be performed later in the week.
