Enyimba vs Williamsville: CAF insist on Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium
Aba club Enyimba say their Confederation Cup home game against Williamsville AC will hold at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, not Godswill Akpabio Stadium, as announced yesterday on their official social media accounts.
Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt — as reported by 234football — was originally picked to replace U.J. Esuene Stadium as Enyimba’s home ground for Confederation Cup matches after CAF deemed the Calabar stadium’s pitch not fit for matches. But on Sunday, the seven-time NPFL champions announced that the matchday three fixture, which was scheduled to kick off at 6pm, was moved to The Nest of Champions due to floodlighting issues.
“CAF slated the match to be played in the night. But the floodlights [at the Amiesimaka Stadium] is faulty. So, we had to look for an alternative venue,” Enyimba’s Head of Media, Farriel Alaputa, told 234football.
But, in a shocking twist, Enyimba on Monday announced that the game will hold at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
“Official: Our Confederation Cup game against Williamsville AC would be played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on July 18, according to CAF. Uyo would no longer be the venue,” the club wrote on Twitter.
Enyimba’s media boss, Farriel Alaputa, revealed that the Aba side preferred The Nest of Champions — where Nigeria’s senior men’s team have played most of their home games in recent years — but were denied by CAF.
“CAF sent us a letter today. They say that they have decided not to grant Uyo stadium (Godswill Akpabio Stadium) to us anymore, that we have to play in Port Harcourt,” Alaputa informed 234football.
“They moved the match from 6pm to 2pm. They said if the floodlights is the problem, we should play in the afternoon in Port Harcourt.
“We said we wanted Uyo, they said no, play in Port Harcourt.”
Alaputa said no reason was given for the decision.
“We don’t know why they denied us [Godswill Akpabio Stadium]. At the end of the day, it’s a CAF competition. You can’t question their decision.”
However, it has been speculated that CAF may have turned down Enyimba’s request to use The Nest of Champions because it had already been used by Akwa United in the same competition earlier this year.
