CAF Awards 2019: Oshoala wins Africa women’s player of the year

Nigeria Super Falcons’ captain, Asisat Oshoala has emerged the 2019 Best Africa Women’s player at the CAF Awards ceremony held in Hurghada, Egypt on Tuesday night.

The 25-year old striker, who won the 2014, 2016 and 2017 editions of the award, claimed her fourth ahead of Ajara Nchout of Cameroon and 2018 winner, Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa, to equal the feat of her countrymate, Perpetua Nkwocha, who won the award in 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2011.

The Barcelona Femeni striker took to social media to express her gratitude to her family, club, teammates and teeming fans for their unflinching support, shortly after the announcement.

Grateful to be African Women’s Player of the year for the 4th time,” she said on Twitter.

“Thank God, my Family, Friends and Fans for the support. Big shoutout to my club , my management , team mates at both national team and club level and of course thanks to @CAF_Online for the opportunity.”

Oshoala has scored 19 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona Femeni, since joining the Primera Iberdrola club in the winter of 2019.

On May 18, 2019, she came off the bench to net Barcelona Femeni’s only goal in UEFA women’s champions league final loss to Lyon, becoming the first Nigerian and African to play and score in the final of Europe’s premier women competition.

She also scored a goal at France 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which helped the Super Falcons reach the knockout stage for the first time in 20 years.

However, Nigeria Super Eagles duo, Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze lost out to enterprising Moroccan defender, Achraf Hakimi in the Africa Youth player of the year category, while Desire Ellis of South Africa won the Africa Women’s Coach of the Year ahead of former Super Falcons’ coach, Thomas Dennerby.
