NFF extends Augustine Eguavoen’s stay as Nigeria boss

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that Augustine Eguavoen will stay on as Nigeria senior men’s team interim coach.
Eguavoen was appointed as Super Eagles caretaker coach in December, following the dismissal of Gernot Rohr.

Eguavoen announced his departure from the Super Eagles following Nigeria’s exit from the AFCON

He was handed the task of guiding Nigeria to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The gaffer led the team to the tournament, with his side turning heads with impressive performances in the group stage before bowing out in the round of 16 after a defeat to Tunisia.
Following Nigeria’s ouster from the biennial tournament, which ended on Sunday, the former World Cup star announced he would leave his role as Nigeria interim manager.
“What happens next is that; I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the NFF, I will go back to my position and allow the Federation make a decision on the way forward,” Eguavoen said.
He was expected to be replaced by Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, who had reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the NFF in December.
However, the NFF, on Monday, announced that the former Enyimba gaffer will continue to lead the three-time AFCON winners in interim capacity, following the recommendation of the NFF Technical and Development Committee.
Eguavoen will be assisted by his USA ’94 team-mate, Amuneke

The 56-year-old will be assisted by Emmanuel Amuneke, a former Tanzania coach and Eguavoen’s team-mate at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Salisu Yusuf and Joseph Yobo will play the roles of second assistant coach and third assistant coach respectively, while Alloy Agu will continue as goalkeepers’ trainer.
The reconstituted technical crew’s immediate task will be guiding Nigeria to World Cup play-off against Ghana in March.
Victory over two legs against the Black Stars will seal Nigeria World Cup qualification.
