Confederation Cup: Enyimba rise to the summit with comeback win over ES Setif

 

Enyimba moved to the top of Confederation Cup Group A following a 2-1 win against ES Setif at Enyimba Stadium on Sunday.
Fatai Osho’s side came from behind to snatch victory against the Algerian club to temporarily move two points clear at the top of the group — but ended the day just a point clear at the summit after Al Ahly Benghazi and Orlando Pirates played out a goalless draw.
For the third straight game in the competition, Austin Oladapo found the back of the net.
Enyimba, on another day, could have played the last 40 minutes with ten men following Mohammed Farouk’s horrendous foul. The Ghanaian launched an insane two-footed tackle. Instead of being dismissed, the midfielder was shown a yellow.
The hosts started the game slowly and deservedly went behind on 13 minutes following some sloppy defending. Les Aigles Noirs carved open the Enyimba defence, presenting Monsef Bakrar with a simple finish.
Four minutes later, Austin Oladapo had a chance to pull his side level from the spot following a foul on Dayo Ojo. Goalkeeper Sofiana Khedaira guessed the Enyimba captain’s intention correctly and saved the penalty.
Five minutes before the break, though, Oladapo atoned for his miss as he smashed in from outside the area after being set up by Dayo Ojo.
And on the hour mark, Tosin Omoyele scored his first goal in the competition off an assist from Anayo Iwuala — and that proved to be the winner.
Late on, Iwuala thought he had won a penalty after he appeared to be brought down. Instead he was booked for dissent.
The two teams will face each other again on April 11. A win against Setif — who sit bottom of the group with just a point — could secure Enyimba passage into the knockout phases.
