Abia Warriors hand Imama Amapakabo ultimatum after shambolic start

Coach Imama Amapakabo barks out instructions at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on 9 January 2020

Abia Warriors have informed coach Imama Amapakabo that he has to win his next three games to save his job at the club.
The Rivers-born tactician has endured a nightmare start to the season, with the Umuahia club rooted to the bottom of the Nigeria Professional Football League table after losing all their opening four matches.

Abia Warriors began the season with an opening-day defeat against local rivals Enyimba.

That was followed by a home loss against Rivers United and a defeat at Akwa United.

On Wednesday, Warriors were widely favoured to beat Jigawa Golden Stars, who had gone into the fixture in Aba on the back of a home defeat against Enugu Rangers.

But despite taking an early lead through Utibe Archibong, they lost the tie 3-1.

Following the humiliating defeat to Badaru Boys, Amapakabo is under huge pressure — and many believe it’s already time to show the gaffer the exit door.

However, the Abia Warriors board, following a meeting with the club’s coaches on Thursday, have chosen not to fire Amapakabo, who led Enugu Rangers to league glory in the 2016-17 season.

The coach, though, has been given a seemingly difficult task of winning his next three games in order to keep his job.
That run begins with a trip to FC Ifeanyi Ubah on Sunday, and will be followed by a home fixture against MFM and a potentially difficult tie at Lobi Stars.
