Victor Osimhen wins Marc Vivien Foé Award

Nigeria international and Lille forward Victor Osimhen has won the 2020 Marc-Vivien Foe Award (Prix Marc-Vivien Foé) for the best African player in France’s Ligue 1.
At 21 years and 6 months old, Osimhen, who won Lille Player of the year earlier this month, becomes the youngest winner of the Radio France International (RFI) and France 24 instituted award.
The 2015 FIFA Under-17 topscorer, polled the most votes (284) from a jury of African sports journalists, ahead of 32-year-old duo of Algerian Monaco forward, Islam Slimani and Stade Reims’ defender, Yunis Abdelhamid of Morocco with 32 votes each.
Osimhen is the second Nigerian to win the prize named in honour of the late Lyon and Cameroon midfielder, Marc Vivien Foé, after Vincent Enyeama’s success in 2014.
Osimhen succeeds former Lille player Nicolas Pepé, who won the 2019 edition before leaving for Arsenal. He becomes the fifth Les Dogues player to claim the award, following Ivory Coast Gervinho’s back-to-back victories in 2010 and 2011, Vincent Enyeama’s win in 2014 and Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal success in 2016.
The former Wolfsburg striker scored 13 goals and made four assists in 27 Ligue 1 matches, before the season was cancelled in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Osimhen, who arrived in Lille last summer from Charleroi, is one of the most sought-after players in the transfer window.
