NEST OF CHAMPIONS STILL SUPER EAGLES HOME- NFF
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have denied reports that the remainder of Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup qualifying matches will be played in Port Harcourt.
Following Nigeria’s shock loss to South Africa in a 2019 AFCON qualifier on June 10, the Nigeria social media was awash with reports claiming the NFF have moved the Super Eagles matches from the Nest of Champions, Uyo to Adokie Aimiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The reports said the Nigeria Football authorities were worried by the ‘spate of bad results’ recorded by the Nigerian team at the stadium, otherwise known as Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
NFF Secretary General, Sanusi Mohammed, who spoke to The Guardian, debunked the claims, saying the NFF would issue a formal statement if a new decision is made.
“We did not tell anybody that the Eagles’ World Cup qualifier against Cameroon and other matches have been moved from Uyo. The NFF will come out with an official statement if such decision is reached,” he said.
“As at this point, all we are focusing on is the must win game against Cameroon and nothing will stop the federation from giving the team all the assistance to qualify for the competition.”
Nigeria will continue with their World Cup qualifying campaign with a home game against African champions, Cameroon in August.
