GLO NPFL 2013/2014 WEEK 20 MATCH REPORT AKWA UNITED 1-0 SHARKS FC

SHARKS CONTINUE POOR FORM WITH DEFEAT AT AKWA
By Mfoniso Williams
Akwa United completed the league double over #Sharks with a 1-0 win at the Uyo Township Stadium, extending the Port Harcourt side’s losing streak in the NPFL to four games.
The home side dominated the early stages and Ukeme Davies went close to putting them in the lead after eight minutes. Akwa were awarded a freekick 25 yards out and Namso Edo whipped in the ball into the six yard box. It presented Davies with a decent chance, but the striker headed wide.
Akwa, though, did not wait for too long to celebrate as captain Ini Akpan made the most of another Edo freekick ten minutes later. The right-back, following a foul on winger Ezekiel Bassey, swung over a superb cross into the heart of Sharks box and Akpan headed into the bottom corne. That was his second of the season.
Moments later, the away side took over control of the game and saw what should have been their equalizer controversially chalked off for offside.
Tayo Fabiyi tormented the hosts in the last 20 minutes of the half. The winger looked dangerous whenever he held on to possession. Twice, he got the better of centre-back Emmanuel Ariwa- the first evading the challenge of the former Niger Tornadoes defender before setting up Brown Brena, who coolly slotted in from close range, only for referee Marcus Bwashi to disallow the goal.
Brena was excellent throughout the game. Sharks best attempts came through him.
Two minutes before the break, Akwa were left bewildered when Bwashi failed to punish goalkeeper Danladi Isah after the big man came off his box to foul Davies, who looked certain to double the hosts’ lead. The striker latched onto a through ball before flicking the ball past the outrushing Sharks keeper with the outside of his boot, but Isah threw his massive frame into the forward’s way. He should have at least been issued a yellow card.
Few minutes after the restart, substitute Ndubuisi Uche tested goalkeeper Victor Obiowo following some schoolboy defending from left-back Ubong Francis.
Frederick Obomate and Tayo Fabiyi enjoyed some control of the game. Sharks, though, had Ezekiel Bassey to handle as the winger showed threat with his pace and tricks.
Godspower Aniefiok, who had a quiet first half, suddenly broke his silence. The play-maker increased his work rate and even went close to scoring through a long-range shot, only to see his effort deflected wide for a corner.
