Josh Maja scores in Bordeaux’s 3-1 defeat at Marseille
Josh Maja came off the bench to score a consultation goal for Bordeaux in the 3-1 loss to Olympique Marseille on Saturday.
Goals from Florian Thauvin and Jordan Amavi and a Pablo own goal gave Marseille a 3-0 lead at Orange Valédrom, before Maja — who was overlooked for Nigeria’s friendlies with Algeria and Tunisia — scored to pull one back.
Thauvin curled into the top corner from outside the box five minutes into the game to put the home team in front.
The Frenchman then blew away a chance to get his second of the evening, failing to beat Benoit Costil from the penalty spot — with the goalkeeper leaping to stop his effort.
Nine minutes after the break, though, the second goal arrived.
Thauvin, 27, turned provider — with Amavi connecting with his cross to send a looping header beyond Costil.
On 64 minutes, Brazil defender Pablo deflected the ball into his own net to increase Marseille’s lead to 3-0.
But Bordeaux, who were without Maja’s international team-mate Samuel Kalu due to injury sustained during International duty, cut one back through Maja.
Receiving a pass from Jimmy Briand, Maja — a 66-minute substitute — charged into the box before firing beyond goalkeeper Steve Mandanda and into the bottom corner.
The strike was his second of the season — his first since the opening-day 2-0 win at Angers.
