José Peseiro appointed successor to Augustine Eguavoen as Nigeria boss

José Peseiro has been appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation as the new head coach of the Nigeria senior men’s team.
The Portuguese, 62, succeeds Augustine Eguavoen, who quit last month after failing to secure the three-time African champions World Cup qualification.
Peseiro was first linked with the Nigeria job in December 2021 following the departure of Gernot Rohr, who was fired after a series of embarrassing results.
He was reportedly expected to sign a contract with Nigeria just before the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held from 9 January to 6 February 2022.

José Peseiro has international experience, having coached Saudi Arabia and Venezuela

However, a deal could not be reached and in the end the NFF elected to name Eguavoen as interim coach.
Eguavoen went on to lead the team to the AFCON, where they crashed out in the round of 16 after an impressive run in the group stage.
Following the Super Eagles exit from the AFCON, the World Cup star announced that he had left the Nigeria head coach job.
However, he returned to take charge of Nigeria’s World Cup Qualifying final round — a two-legged play-off with Ghana.

Nigeria failed to prevail over the Black Stars and the former Enyimba boss quit again, leaving the Super Eagles managerial job vacant.
But with Nigeria due to play a 2023 AFCON qualifying match against Sierra Leone early next month, there was mounting pressure on the NFF to name a new boss for the team.
And on Sunday, the football body announced the appointment of Peseiro — a former Venezuela boss — as the new Super Eagles manager.
The new coach is expected to take charge in the upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador.
He will work alongside Finidi George (1st Assistant), Salisu Yusuf (2nd Assistant) and Ike Shorunmu (Goalkeepers’ trainer).
