Confederation Cup: Rivers United earn scrappy win over Al Masry

Goals from Uche Onwuasoanya and Ishaq Kayode earned Rivers United a 2-1 win over Al Masry in the Confederation Cup Additional Second Preliminary Round first leg on Sunday.
Ishaq Kayode scored one and set up another for Stanley Eguma’s men, who would be wary of the Egyptian side ahead of the second leg in Alexandria next week.
Played at Enyimba Stadium, the game saw the home side — whose home ground Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium failed a CAF inspection test — start strongly but struggle in the closing stages.
Onwuasoanya put Eguma’s team ahead in 25th minute after latching onto Ohawume’s pass, but their lead was short-lived as Mohamed Antar levelled things up barely two minutes later.
United regained their lead ten minutes before the break thanks to cool finish from Kayode following another Ohawume pass.
When the teams emerged from the tunnel for the second half, the home fans were expecting an improved performance from their players.
However, they were left disappointed as the hosts struggled to find their rhythm.
The visitors controlled large spells of the second half but United managed to hold on to their advantage.
Next Sunday, the Port Harcourt side will face Zaeem Al Qanāh again — this time, at Burj Al Arab Stadium, Alexandria. Given today’s result, a draw will be enough to send them to the group stage.
