David Okereke scores winner as Venezia beat Roma in five-goal thriller
David Okereke scored the match winner as Venezia came from behind to edge out Roma in a five-goal thriller at Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium in the Serie A on Sunday.
Venezia took the lead within three minutes of kick-off thanks to Mattia Caldara, who turned in Mattia Aramu’s free-kick.
At the break, though, Paolo Zanetti’s men saw themselves trailing after they conceded two goals in the final five minutes of the half.
Uzbekistan forward Eldor Shomurodov stabbed home from close range after goalkeper Sergio Romero spilled Tammy Abraham’s header, before Abraham scored to end a seven-game goals drought.
The Winged Lions emerged looking more confident and dynamic after the interval and they were level on 65 minutes, with Aramu sending Romero the wrong way from the penalty spot following a foul.
And nine minutes later, Okereke netted what turned out to be the match winner.
Okereke, 24, found himself one-on-one with Rui Patricio after beating the offside trap to connect with Ethan Ampadu’s clever through ball, beating the Portuguese goalkeper with a tricky finish.
The goal took the Nigerian’s goals tally to three for the season.
