Finidi George set to become new Enyimba head coach

Finidi George is set to be appointed as the new head coach of Enyimba.
George is expected to take over from Fatai Osho, who leaves the club after reaching the end of his contract this month.
Reports of the former Ipswich Town player’s imminent appointment as the club’s gaffer, though, has attracted criticism from some fans — with many questioning his suitability for the job, given that he has never managed at the top level before.
The former Nigeria international’s only previous coaching role came in 2013, when he managed the youth team of his erstwhile Spanish club, Real Betis.
George ended his playing career in 2004 and has been seeking an opportunity to coach the Nigeria youth teams and Nigeria Professional Football League clubs since concluding his coaching internship at Dutch outfit PEC Zwolle.
In a career that spanned 15 years, he participated in two World Cups, won the Africa Cup of Nations; and earned three Eredivisie and UEFA Champions League titles with Dutch giants Ajax.
George started his playing career at Iwuanyanwu National and from there he moved to Sharks, before joining Ajax in1993.
The 50-year-old left Ajax in 1996 and went on to play for Real Betis, Real Mallorca and Ipswich Town before retiring.

He will replace Osho, who took to social media to send a heartfelt goodbye message to Enyimba, ahead of his departure from the club.
“I use this medium to thank everyone for my journey of two years with this great club and institution which has now come to an end,” the former Remo Stars gaffer, who first joined the club as an assistant coach before being made head coach following the sacking of Usman Abd’Allah in January 2020,
wrote.
“I want to thank all the players, coaches and management that have made it possible for us to achieve the little we were able to achieve during my time.”
Last season, he guided Enyimba to the quarter-finals of the Confederation Cup but had a tumultuous relationship with the club’s fans, following a poor home record in the league — which eventually cost them the title.
Enyimba finished third in the league, six points adrift of winners Akwa United.
