CAF Champions League First-round: Akwa United opponents CR Belouizdad win league title for second successive season
Akwa United’s opponents for next month’s two-legged CAF Champions League first-round tie, CR Belouizdad, secured back-to-back Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 titles following Saturday’s win against USM Alger.
Le Grand Chabab were confirmed as Algerian top-flight winners for a second straight season with a game to spare after claiming a 4-2 win at USM Alger to move five points clear at the top of the standings.
Amir Sayoud scored either side of Hichem Khalfallah’s strike to give Zoran Manojlovic’s men a 3-0 half-time lead.
Abderrahim Hamra cut one back for the home team on the hour mark but 14 minutes later, Housem Mrezigue restored the three-goal advantage.
With seven minutes of normal time left, the hosts scored again — this time through Ismail Belkacemi — but the visitors held on for the final minutes to claim victory and seal their eighth top-flight title.
On Tuesday, The Whites and Reds will face Biskra in the final game of the season.
And after that, they will turn their attention to the Champions League, first-round, first-leg clash with Akwa United — which is scheduled to hold at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on September 12.
