Waasland-Beveren 1-1 Genk: Paul Onuachu extends league goals tally to seven

Paul Onuachu moved to the top of the Jupiler Pro League goalscoring charts after scoring his seventh Pro League goal of the season in Genk’s 1-1 draw with Waasland-Beveren at Freethiel Stadion on Saturday.
Named Pro League player for the month of September on Friday after netting five goals in three matches, the Nigerian extended his scoring run to four matches.
The goal moved the 26-year-old one goal clear of Waasland-Beveren’s Daan Heymans.

Onuachu headed in a corner at the near post in the 67th minute to hand his side the lead but six minutes into stoppage time, Aleksandar Vukotic Stoke stabbed home from close range — after goalkeeper Nordin Jankers spilled a header — to salvage a point for the hosts and end Wase Wolven’s three-match losing run.
Left out of Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia, the striker admits he wants to finish as top scorer in Belgium’s top-flight after what has been a brilliant start to the season for him.
“I want to keep improving. Belgium’s top scorer, I dream of it, but I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself,” the Nigerian said. “Having said that, the season is off to a good start for me, we’ll see where I end up,” he said.
Onuachu is flourishing under new manager Jess Thorup, whom he worked under at Danish club FC Midtjylland.
The duo won the Danish Superliga in the 2017-18, and Onuachu believes Thorup can replicate that kind of success with Genk this season, despite sitting tenth on the Pro League log after eight rounds of games.
“I was already Danish champion with Midtjylland under the leadership of Jess Thorup. And of course we dream of repeating that together with Racing Genk.”
