Nnamdi Collins signs new three-year deal with Borussia Dortmund
Highly-rated 16-year old defender of Nigerian descent, Nnamdi Collins has signed a three-year contract extension with Borussia Dortmund which will keep him at the North Rhine-Westphalia region till 2023, the German club announced on Friday.
Collins turned down overtures from two Premier League clubs, Manchester City and Chelsea, who were reportedly ready to offer as much as €2m to sign the youngster.
The centre-back’s decision to extend his stay at the club follows assurances from Dortmund coaches over his first-team ambitions.
Collins is expected to progress from the Under-19 and become an integral part of the first team in summer of 2021.
Youth coordinator Lars Ricken commented on the contract extension, saying: “We are very happy that with Nnamdi we can retain an outstanding talent for young German football at BVB in the long term.”
“We want to introduce Nnamdi to the professional sector step by step and give him time to develop,” Sports Director Michael Zorc added.
Collins said he was looking forward to penning s professional deal with the club in no time.
“I have been playing for Borussia Dortmund since I was 12 and I owe a lot to the club,” Collins told BVB.de.
“My goal is to become a professional at BVB and to be able to play in front of ‘Süd’ at some point.
“I am really grateful that all of my previous trainers, my family and my advisors have supported me in this way and I am really looking forward to the coming years at BVB.”
The German Under-16 national team captain, who has been with Dortmund Under-17 team since 2016 played 21 times for the Black and Yellow Juniors in the 2019-20 Under-17 Bundesliga Junior League, scoring four times and providing an assist.
Touted as one of the biggest talents in German football, the 6’2” defender will be part of the Under-19 Bundesliga in the upcoming 2020-21 season, despite being eligible for another season in the Under-17 Bundesliga.
