Fatai Osho unveiled as new Akwa United head coach

Akwa United have formally confirmed Fatai Osho as their new boss following the departure of Ayodeji Ayeni at the end of the 2022-23 season.

The ex-Remo Stars coach reached an agreement with the Uyo club on a one-year contract to replace Ayeni in June, after leaving his role as Rivers United assistant coach.

In July, he guided the team to the Naija Super 8 tournament — where they reached the semi-finals.

After nearly two months on the job, the former Enyimba gaffer’s appointment has officially been confirmed as the club look ahead to the new season.

Osho was unveiled as the Promise Keepers’ new boss in a press conference at Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

Explaining why it took more than a month for the appointment to be confirmed, club chairman, Paul Bassey, said: “This coach (Osho) came in. In one week, he put a team together and we went to Lagos [for the Naija Super 8 tournament].

“Though we didn’t win, we took a lot of positives from the competition. One of it was that the coach that we took — with his pedigree, with his experience — is a coach that can take us to El Dorado. He’s a coach that can return us to the continent. So, we decided that we were going to keep him here.

“But at the time he (Osho) joined us, there was a transition in government. There was no Commissioner, there was no Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the governor. So, we waited for a Commissioner to be named; we waited for the chairman of Akwa United to be confirmed.”
