Taiwo Awoniyi scores twice in Union Berlin’s win at Mainz
Taiwo Awoniyi scored a brace to help Union Berlin claim a 2-1 victory at Mainz on Sunday.
After being denied by a goal-line clearance five minutes after the break, the Nigerian scored to cancel out Marcus Ingvartsen’s first-half opener, before finding the net again to give the visitors all three points.
Ingvartsen had fired the hosts in front in the 39th minute nine minutes after the hour mark, Awoniyi brought Urs Fischer’s side level.
Receiving a pass from MaxKruse, the 24-year-old — who netted the third goal in Thursday’s Europa Conference League 3-0 win over Maccabi Haifa — darted into the box before finding the bottom corner to register his first Bundesliga goal since the 2-1 victory against Mönchengladbach on August 29.
Four minutes later, the former Mouscron man fired home from the edge of the box off Kevin Behrens’ headed pass, and the goal turned out to be the match winner.
The brace took the striker’s tally to five in the Bundesliga and eight in all competitions this season.
