Super Eagles Watch: Taiwo Awoniyi hospitalized after nasty collision
Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi spent the night in hospital after suffering a concussion following a collision with Augsburg’s Felix Uduokhai in the Zero-fivers 1-0 loss at Opel Arena on Sunday.
Making his fourth straight start, the 22-year old was looking to score his first goal for the Achim Beierlorzer’s side since the 2-2 draw at Koln on May 17.
However, barely 23 minutes into the game, the on-loan Liverpool man was stretchered off with a nasty head injury after a clash of heads with Udokhai, who is nigerian descent.
With Mainz chasing an equalizer after Florian Niederlechner gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the first minute, Awoniyi leapt to connect with a cross but ended up colliding with the defender.
He momentarily lost consciousness after landing awkwardly, and was stretchered off with his neck on a brace after a long delay while he received medical attention on the pitch.
The U17 World Cup winner was then taken to hospital for observation after regaining consciousness.
Awoniyi has yet to make an appearance for Liverpool since signing for the Anfield side in 2015.
He had loan stints at FSV Frankfurt, Nijmejen, Mouscron and Gent, before joining Mainz last year.
