Boniface nets last gasp winner against Wolfsburg in a seven-goal thriller

Victor Boniface poked home a 93rd minute winner – his third goal of the season – as defending champion, Bayer Leverkusen came from behind twice to beat VfL Wolfsburg 4-3 in the German Bundesliga matchday four game on Sunday.

Leverkusen new signing Nordi Mukiele scored a fifth-minute own goal to put Wolfsburg ahead, but Leverkusen replied with goals from Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah, off Granit Xhaka and Alejandro Grimaldo’s free kick and corner kick, respectively.

Wolfsburg restored parity and went ahead before half-time, following goal via header from Sebastiaan Bornauw and a strike from just outside the box by Mattias Svanberg.

The host levelled the score again with a header from defender Piero Hincapie, off Aleix Garcia’s cross, early in the second half.

The visitors however, suffered a setback two minutes from time as substitute Yannick Gerhardt saw red for a dangerous tackle, within 17 minutes of play, as the host took advantage to press for the winner, which paid off in a dramatic turn of event.

Granit Xhaka rattled the goalpost with a curling shot in the first minute of stoppage time, before Boniface got the breakthrough two minutes later, as he turned and shot past goalkeeper Kamil Grabara into the bottom corner, despite being marked by three opponents in the penalty area.

Xabi Alonso led Leverkusen are three points behind Bayern, who are unbeaten in four league games under the new coach, Vincent Kompany, and are set to face-off at the Allianz Arena, Munich on Saturday 28 September 2024 by 16.30 GMT.
