WAFCON: Asisat Oshoala to miss rest of tournament due to injury

Barcelona Femení forward Asisat Oshoala has been forced to withdraw from the Nigeria Women’s Africa Cup of Nations squad with a knee injury picked up during Monday’s disappointing loss to South Africa.
The Barcelona Femení star suffered a grade 2 medial collateral ligament strain in the first half of the game — which ended 2-1 in favour of South Africa — but managed to play on till the 82nd minute.
Oshoala is set to miss the rest of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after injuring her knee in Monday’s group game against Banyana Banyana.
According to the Nigeria Football Federation, who confirmed the injury, the four-time African player of the year is set to miss the rest of tournament and she will — on Thursday —
travel to Spain, where she’s due to undergo surgery.

Her withdrawal from the team is a major blow to Nigeria, whose title-defence ambitiond were dented by Desiree Ellis’ side.
Goals from Hildah Magaia and Jermaine Seoposenwe gave South Africa a well-deserved 2-0 lead, but Atletico Madrid Feminino forward Rasheedat Ajibade scored in stoppage time to pull one back.
On Thursday, the 11-time champions turn their attention to Botswana.
Randy Waldrum’s side are highly favoured to beat the Southern African country.
