Charles Atshimene completes move to CD Feirense
Portuguese club CD Feirense have completed the signing of Charles Atshimene from Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Akwa United.
Atshimene moved to Akwa United from Warri Wolves in December 2020 and after just a season with the Promise Keepers — where he netted 19 goals to finish joint-top scorer in the Nigerian top-flight — the Delta-born forward attracted lots of offers from within and outside Africa.
His impressive performances for Akwa United earned him a call-up to the Nigeria national team for a friendly against Mexico in July.
The 20-year-old, who started the test game against El Tri, was strongly linked with a move to Tunisian heavyweights Esperance as well as a number of clubs in eastern Europe, but has now completed a move to Marcolino Castro Stadium.
He netted a hat-trick against MFM on August 1 to help Akwa United side defeat the Lagos side 5-3 — a result that sealed the league for Kennedy Boboye’s team.
Feirense, who are looking to gain promotion back to Portuguese first division, have also added three other Nigerians — Anthony Shimaga, Ochowechi Oche and Mathais Ogwuche — to their ranks.
Shimaga — who also featured in the friendly against Mexico — joins the Portugal Liga2 club from Enugu Rangers, Oche signs from Plateau United, while Ogwuche makes the move from Remo Stars.
Details of their deals have not been revealed but the quartet, according to a club statement, will be immediately integrated into Rui Ferreira’s squad.
