Huge scare as Samuel Kalu collapses during Bordeaux’s Ligue 1 fixture at Marseille

There was a scare at Stade Valedrome on Sunday as Nigeria international Samuel Kalu collapsed during Bordeaux’s Ligue 1 tie against Olympique Marseille, which ended 2-2.
Kalu dropped to the ground six minutes into the fixture as Dmitri Payet prepared to take a free-kick amid scorching temperatures but recovered to continue playing, before being withdrawn minutes later.
Players from both sides called for medical attention for the former Gent star and then formed a human shield — similar to the one formed around Christian Eriksen during this year’s Euro Championship — as the 23-year-old was being treated on the pitch.

It is unclear what led to the incident but Kalu has collapsed on a football pitch before.
On the eve of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations opener in Egypt back in 2019, the winger was rushed to hospital after collapsing during Nigeria’s training.
It was speculated that the incident was caused by cardiovascular disease, but a Super Eagles medical official blamed it on ‘severe dehydration’.
