Dessers, Onuachu inspire Genk to victory over Anderlecht

An opening goal from Paul Onuachu and a Cyriel Dessers’ winner were enough to seal a 2-1 win for Genk against their host, Anderlecht in the Jupiler Pro League championship play-off round tie on Saturday

Onuachu continued his blistering form with his fourth consecutive strike in the championship play-off round and 33rd goal in 37 games in the Belgium Jupiler Pro League, this season.

The 26-year-old striker and Belgium top-flight leading scorer, tapped into bottom left corner on the 17th minute, after Anderlecht’s goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen spilled Theo Bongonda’s shot from the left to the Nigerian’s path.

Germany U-23 International of Nigerian descent, Lukas Nmecha capitalised on a defensive mix-up to drew the host on level terms with a left-footed effort inside the penalty area, just after the half-hour mark.

In the second period, Genk coach, Van den Brom replaced Onuachu with international team-mate, Cyriel Dessers.

The former Heracles Almelo forward fired The Smurfs to victory within 10 minutes of play via a header – his fifth goal in 30 league games – following a great set piece from Theo Bongonda on the 86th minute, condemning Vincent Kompany tutored side to their first league defeat since February.

Genk, who are placed second in tbe Championship play-off group with 38 points, have a date with Royal Antwerp on Thursday, May 20 and a final day clash with Club Brugge on Sunday, May 23.

Onuachu has been shortlisted by Coach Gernot Rohr for a friendly against Cameroon, while Dessers, who debuted for the Super Eagles in a 1–1 draw against Tunisia in a friendly last year, has been left out.
