Akwa United aim to extend unbeaten run at MFM

By Akila Matawal

At no point this Nigeria Professional Football League season have Akwa United enjoyed a richer vein of form as in their last five matches.
The 1-1 draw at Enyimba in February — which followed the 1-0 home win over Plateau United — set the tone for the team’s renaissance, which has seen the Promise Keepers go five games unbeaten — drawing two away and winning all three at home with just one goal conceded. Rivers United got drained 3-0 in Uyo, the biggest win in this period and a result that threw confusion into the camp of the Port Harcourt side.
On Sunday, Akwa United take on MFM at the Agege Stadium and given their current form, a positive result for Kennedy Boboye’s men looks likely.
Boboye, after the 1-0 mid-week victory over Ifeanyi Ubah, said the trip to MFM would be another shot at glory for his side.

“We’ve had an agreement [within Akwa United] that in five matches, we get 15 points. We keep pushing. It’s doable.
“We’ve done it before in this team; five matches unbeaten and won the whole five. So we are going there to try and get the maximum points.”
Akwa United’s vice-captain Ubong Friday, like Boboye, believes his side can get a good result at Agege Stadium, despite an embarrassing away record against the Lagos club, who are in desperate need of points as they seek to move away from the drop zone.
In four trips to MFM, Akwa United have picked just a point, but Friday seems unperturbed by the record and is hopeful of a good outcome.
“We are not too far away from the top and that is why our match against MFM is very important.
“We see every match as an opportunity to improve our standing on the log, and on Sunday, we won’t leave anything to chance.”
Akwa United, with a game in hand, are fifth on the NPFL log with 26 points after 15 games — and just a point off the pace.
A win against MFM could take the two-time Aiteo Cup winners to the top of the standings.
