KESHI TO CONTINUE AS SUPER EAGLES COACH
The Nigeria Football Federation says it has offered Stephen Keshi a new contract to stay on as coach of the national team and expects him to sign it in the next few days.
The NFF made the announcement on Tuesday without disclosing any terms relating to the contract.
In a brief comment on the contract, the NFF said its executive committee expects the new contract to be finalized by the two parties “in a matter of days.”
Keshi led Nigeria to the African Cup title in 2013 and the second round of this year’s World Cup in Brazil. However, his relationship with the NFF has been strained. He quit the day after Nigeria won the African Cup in South Africa last year but was convinced to rescind his resignation.
SHOLA AMEOBI JOINS GAZIANTEP
Shola Ameobi has signed a year contract with Turkish second division club, Gaziantep Buyuksehir Belediyespor, after being released by Newscatle United.
The Zaria-born 32 year old striker came through the ranks for the Magpies before making his debut in September 2002. He made 397 appearances for Newscatle United, scoring 79 goals, before he was released.
He recently featured for Nigeria, and was also part of coach Stephen Keshi’s team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He played in the UEFA Champions League and scored against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in December 2002.
DEDEVBO HOPES TO TOP GROUP C
Falconets head coach Dedevbo has said he hopes to win Group C of the U20 Women’s World Cup in Canada with victory over England.
Saturday’s 2-1 win over Korea Republic has already put Nigeria on top of the group with four points but the coach stressed that the team will continue to train hard in order to clinch the three points against England.
England and Mexico have two points each after they drew 1-1 also on Saturday, while Korea are bottom of the standings with a point.
Meanwhile, Falconets Halima Ayinde and
Asisat Oshoalat has won most valuable player in the match against Korea and Mexico respectively.
The team are already in Edmonton, training ahead of their final group game on wednesday (Thursday August 14, 01:00am in Nigeria).
Nigeria need only a draw against England to guarantee top spot in the group. However their opponent will need an outright win to guarantee a place in the quarter-final.
